2025 Mokuhanga Printing Workshop for Kids
At Whitman College 12/25
Lead by Benjamin Selby, Charles Marr, Kayo Hirao, and Jayne Eacker of Mokuhanga Project Space, and hosted by Sheehan Gallery.
In these two, two-hour workshops the kids were able to carve and print their own original artwork by hand using traditional mokuhanga techniques! For the younger group, k-3rd grade, their adults stayed with the to help them carve. I was a bit hesitant to have kids this young carving, but it went really well!
2025 Summer Mokuhanga Workshop
At Foundry Vineyards 6/9
Lead by Benjamin Selby of Mokuhanga Project Space
In June 2025 MPS held a fantastic one-day introductory mokuhanga workshop at Foundry Vineyards Gallery in Walla Walla, WA. Participants explored traditional Japanese printmaking techniques, goma-zuri (sesame texture), mokume (woodgrain), scratch & chatter carving, and bokashi (gradient), all while surrounded by work from 12 inspiring past residency artists. The workshop focused on eco-conscious practices, using mostly local woods: local cedar, reclaimed pallet pine, local cherry, local black willow, and basswood. Prints were made on beautiful handmade kizuki washi from Ehime, Japan. We’re deeply grateful to the Wildhorse Foundation for making this free workshop possible by providing a generous grant. We are ever appreciative of Foundry Vineyards for their continued support of Mokuhanga Project Space. Special thanks to our amazing residency artists who helped set up and assisted during the workshop, you made it all the more special. And finally, to our MPS members and community, thank you for helping these projects grow and thrive!
2024 Mokuhanga Printing Workshop for Kids
At Whitman College 11/24
Lead by Benjamin Selby of Mokuhanga Project Space, special guest teacher Chihiro Taki, and hosted by Sheehan Gallery.
We are so thrilled by the incredible creativity and energy we saw during this Winter Children’s Mokuhanga Workshops! We had two wonderful groups for 2hrs each—one for younger kids (as young as 4!) who had a great time creating stencils to print, and another for older kids who explored carving and printing! The kids had a blast, and it was clear their parents were just as proud of their work. A huge thank you to Chihiro Taki for their invaluable help and to Sheehan Gallery for generously providing all the materials! We’re delighted to offer these opportunities and can’t wait to bring more in the future. A big thanks again to everyone who made these workshops so memorable! We’re already looking forward to the next one!
2024 Laser Carved Mokuhanga Workshop
At Whitman College and Foundry Vineyards 6/22-23
Lead by Benjamin Selby, Mike Lyon, Charles Marr, and Kayo Hirao
Thank you to everyone who was able to attend our recent workshop! Additional thanks to Benjamin Selby, Mike Lyon, Charles Marr, and Kayo Hirao who led the workshop. Finally, thanks to Keiko Hara, Lynn Sealey, Lisa Anderson, and Jay Anderson whose support made it all possible! In this year’s two-day workshop we started at Whitman College, introducing the students to the work of various artists who use digital technology, beginning with a talk from Mike Lyon, followed by showing them how to prepare and engrave images with a laser engraver. The following day at Foundry Vineyards Gallery, we introduced them to some of the history of mokuhanga followed by them printing their laser carved blocks. It is a lot to pack into 6hrs total, but we hope this workshop was able to show them at least a little of what is possible with all the modern tools we have access to nowadays!
